Surface corroded hardware cleans up quite easily, first by removing the hardware and soaking it in penetrating oil, then using a Dremel wire wheel or a small wire brush to easily remove the surface corrosion, leaving a nice period-patina.  See the before & after inset example of hardware cleanup below.

Exposed joints can and should be reglued (for water proofing a case is supposed to offer) with EXTERIOR water based wood glue and clamps or weights, easily controlling the glue application with a small artists brush.  If desired,
exposed wood along joints and edges can be touched up with several coats of acrylic paints or vinyl repair kits, both available in the Crafts section of Walmart and many other sundrie stores.
