No, ....this Tele wasn't a junkie !
I am not an expert at identifying wood species, ....but not a slouch either!  From what I can see of the wood's grain under the translucent paint finish, and can guess from playing and feeling the guitar, ....I am making a decent guess that the wood is dry-land Ash.  It's grain is quite tight, aligned well and visually pleasant, not wide and loose like Alder.  The woods resonance under a stethescope and when playing acoustic and electric sounds much more like Ash than Alder, Poplar, Basswood, etc.
