THIS LIST IS CURRENT AS OF 8-2-08.

The purpose of this list is for an archive of information and data for this guitar, ....because some of the info is often difficult to determine after a guitar is assembled.  This list and the webpages associated with it will not be fully completed until after the guitar is shipped, because info is gathered right up to the time of packing, and I do this website work during times when it doesn't interfere with the ongoing shop work on the guitar.

When this website work is completed I will remove the 'Under Construction' panels;  And then these pages should be downloaded and saved for future reference for this guitar.  This info will be especially helpful if any future repair work is done on the guitar, as it will give the person doing the repair a good look inside the guitar and work already done beforehand.

Note:  After this website was started (pages 1 thru 3) for a customer's inquiry, the customer didn't think he could accomplish the purchase for a few days (not his fault);  Therefore I started additional work on the guitar in order to completely refurbish it while it was open on my bench.  But the customer was subsequently able to purchase the guitar, and didn't elect a complete refurbishment at additional costs;  So it is being re-assembled as said on this list and shown ont the ongoing webpages, without any additional costs to the customer.  All is Good;  It's good to document one of these Kawai / Teiscos that I have not seen anyone else document before.

This list is not in any particular chronological order other than some correlation of some of the related information.

INSPECTION INFO, WORK DONE AND WORK REMAINING TO DO:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WORK ALREADY DONE ON GUITAR:

+++++ Add this guitar to my inventory index, and link from the old inventory page listing.

+++++ Excellent truss rod access cover not shown in pics.  Cleaned up well.

+++++ Tuners were removed and their metal parts soaked in Blaster PB capillary penetrating oil.

+++++ I removed all hardware, soaked all non-electrical metal parts in Blaster PB capillary penetrating oil and
            ultrasound and low freq mechanical agitation.

+++++ Guitar has considerable "bar-room" patina (grunge);  Years of not being disassembled and cleaned
            well.  The guitar was taken care of rather well, but not cleaned !  I cleaned the body and neck and plastics.

+++++ Cleaned fretboard.

+++++ Lemon oiled fretboard.

+++++ Removed pickguard and all electronics therefrom for inspections and work.

+++++ Cleaned Rocker switches and their contacts and lubed with Cailube.

+++++ Pickups covers were cleaned of light corrosion and hidden grunge below pickguard.

+++++ One pickup was opened up for internal condition inspection.  All inside was in good condition with normal
            spots of light corrosion on the metal base plate.

+++++ Cleaned grunge and mild corrosion on front and back of pickguard.  Pickguard required abrasive cleaning of
            it's back side for good grounds contact / shielding.

+++++ Cleaned out the output jack's sleeve and it's tip contact.

+++++ Reworked the strings ground wire to the vibrato.

+++++ Hand tied the wiring harness together to help prevent wire damage from wires being loose in the harness.

+++++ A schematic of this guitar's circuit was made and provided on page 8.

+++++ A switch and pots functions side-page was made for page 8.  A circuit and switching logic will be added to
           page 8 as soon as I have time to compile same after the guitar is shipped.

+++++ No replacement bridge saddle I had would fit this guitar's bridge base plate and wheel screws span.  I intoned
           the bridge saddle by removing treble side base plate screw and tilting treble side forward, using the bass-side
           screw and string pressure to hold the intonation in place.  See the bridge page.

+++++ Tuners were cleaned and reinstalled and their clutch-screws adjusted, and lubed with drops of Tri-Flow
            TPFE oil.

+++++ I will provide new metal tuner post ferrules for temporary or permanant use as desired.

+++++ All metal parts were brushed off, de-oiled of Blaster and re-oiled with Ace Lub-E wipe as they are installed
            during reassembly.

+++++ Several white scuff marks on the guitar were cleaned off.

+++++ Rear strap button was missing and it's screw hole needed refurbish.  Refurbished strap button holes and
            installed new strap buttons.

+++++ An extra left-handed strap button had been installed in the past.  I removed that button and capped it's hole.

+++++ Added #6 stainless steel washers to back side of string "tree" loom.

+++++ Doweled all screw holes with toothpicks to tighten up old holes.

+++++ Installed return to tuning stabilizing rubber under vibrato springs bracket.

+++++ Removed lefty strap button someone installed in the guitar's past.  Filled, capped and painted that repair4.

+++++ Sanded, compounded and polished all hole capping and paint work.

+++++ New strap buttons were installed.  If desired, they can be faux aged to match guitar by removing them and
            soaking the buttons and screws overnight in Coca Cola, or soaking for an hour in Muratic Acid (neutralized
            by putting into a strong Baking Soda solution upon removal from the acid).

+++++ I had to file the bridge saddle slots for strings 1 and 2 in order for them to stay in the slots while playing.

+++++ Adjusted pickups and pole pieces heights to balance the pickups volumes fore-aft and latterally.  Pole pieces
            were are all adjusted all the way down EXCEPT (string / pole piece):  1/1 = 1.75 turns up;  1/3 = 1.75 turns up;
            2/3 = 1.25 turns up.  Water-thinned Elmers Glue All was used to tighten those pole pieces threads to maintain
            their adjustment.

+++++ Output jack was cleaned and bore-scrubbed, and currently works well, but; (See Info and Suggestions
            Section for jack info / suggestion):

+++++ Make custom cartons for international shipping.

+++++ Pack guitar.

+++++ Complete Customs and USPS forms.

+++++ Ship guitar.

+++++ After guitar is shipped, compile and add circuit and switching logic text to page 8's schematic.

WORK YET TO DO:

- - - - -  After guitar is shipped, draw an illustration of how a vibrato bar would be made to fit this guitar's vibrato
            machinery.

- - - - -  After guitar is shipped, go over all shop work notes for any info and suggestions to add to these webpages.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INFO AND SUGGESTIONS SECTION:

#####  It is reasonable to expect that the jack will likely need changing in the future due to it's age and thus normal corroision cleanups and thus likely oversized and thus probably not a good tight fit.  It was bore cleaned well and works well but is subject to attracting corrosion because of it's long history of chrome in it's bore being repeatedly corroded and cleaned and thus depleted for corrosion protection.
#####  Guitar Finish is urethane.  If compounding some scars out is desired, then do so a bit slower and softer than with laquer.  An excellent fine compounding paste can be made by thinning toothpaste with water;  It works excellent as a fine polishing compound.

#####  Rocker switches:  Internal inspection found that the rocker switches work by isolated dual-post pinch contacts in the phoenolic base plates at each end of each rocker, and are shorted to complete each isolated posts circuit by a blade in the rocker that inserts into the pinch contacts when the rocker is rocked in each direction.  See
schematic page
and the internal rocker switch views page.

#####  For a thorough cleaning, the rocker fulcrum axle would have to be de-crimped on one end and the axle removed to remove rockers to clean their blade contact.  See close up picture of rocker switchs' interior.

#####  Pickup casings can be further polished of patina with a motorized buffer, if desired.  KEEP ANY AND ALL CHEMICALS FROM ENTERING THE PICKUP FROM THE TOP OR BOTTOM OF THE CASING;  No kind of chemical should enter a pickup.

#####  Pickups and their plates cannot be oil soaked due to the coils and wires.  But with the luxury of time, if desired, each of the minor spots of corrosion on the base plate can be removed with small tools and then coated with corrosion inhibitor;  Best done with jewelers' magnifying glasses.  See detailed pictures of pickups.

#####  This guitar is in Very Good to Excellent 95-97% condition with average fair use marks and surface corrosion normal for well used guitars of this era.

#####  Nominal dings, scuffs, mars and scratches.

#####  All the guitar's parts but the strap pins and strings ground jumper wire appear to be original.
#####  The big headstock makes this guitar look much bigger than it actually is.  The scale length is a standard 25".

#####  Strings spacing span at the nut is 9/32";  And at the bridge is 7/16".
#####  Small-medium size frets are in excellent condition with plenty of meat for dressing if desired, although really not needed.

#####  Non intoneable bridge.  See bridge solutions webpage.

#####  The guitar's BLACK finish appears to be polyurethane; Evidenced by it's application and wear character (little bubbles instead of laquer checking).  The clear finish appears to be an early type of acrylic laquer; Evidenced by mica looking flakes where it has been knocked or peeled off in a few small places.  If compounding / polishing is ever desired, then compounding polyurethane should be done slower and softer than with laquer as polyurethane will roll off in little balls if it gets too warm / hot during compounding.

#####  This guitar has only 2 original plastic tuner string post ferrules.  Plastic and nylon grommets from large hardware stores are likely to be available.  Standard tuner string post ferrules will fit (which I will install on the guitar).
#####

#####  An extra mis-matched front strap button was added in the past for left handed playing of right hand stringing.

#####  The original 6 IL strip tuners function well with proper clutch-screw adjustment and up-tuning technique common to old strip tuners.  These tuners have had a unique "bar-room" repair that works remarkably well.  I would personally leave them just as they are as they add the "mojo" obvious in this guitar's past (imho).
#####  Standard strip tuners will fit if desired.  BE SURE to measure them both in SAE and in METRIC so a parts supplier can be sure to provide new tuners that will fit.

#####  Notice that the position markers at and above the 12th fret are one fret lower than American / European standard (and now Japan standard, which wasn't the case when this guitar was built and Japan's "standard" was pretty much left up to the designer !

#####  Bridge saddle slots should be filed deeper by a Luthier or guitar tech, ...into either to a 'V' or to a custom string gauge.

#####  The vibrato assembly was installed at the factory out of line and out of square with the strings.  This can be corrected but will require filling the old holes so new closely located holes don't collapse into old holes;  And new holes marked and drilled for the vibrato to mount in-line and square.  NOTICE:  If a new bridge and/or bridge saddle is going to be found / used, then wait until that is acquired to align all together at the same time.  The vibrato is functional in it's misaligned position.

#####  The pickups are adjusted as hight as they will go, ...matching the rear pickup at it's highest adjustment range.  If it is ever desired to adjust the pickups higher, then the pickup height adjustment springs can be replaced with "shim springs" made from surgical rubber tube to the height desired.  The surgical rubber "shim springs" will hold the pickups nicely at a new higher height closer to the strings for even more pickups dynamics, if desired.

#####  Kawai / Teisco would paint certain chrome parts that were blemished and install them on low-end cost models, as was done with this guitar.  The factory paint on the vibrato cover and on the tuners' string posts valance, can be sand blasted and rechromed or painted with the new VERY NICE chrome paints now available.  Rechroming or painting with chrome paint requires someone well familiar and talented with those processes, or someone motivated to learn and practice before doing it on an instrument.  The cover and valance are in pretty good condition;  But if desired, simply repainting those parts their original "Equipment Panel Silver" is a reasonably easy repaint for a reasonbly good painter and paint-prep'er, with automotive paint suppliers able to match the color even in in-house aerosol spray cans.  If simply touching up the original paint is desired, then touch up can be done with matching paint applied with small professional artist brushes (by someone who is good at such craft ....or by learning by practicing on scrap materials with magnifying glasses).
