Albert King passes torch to Lee King
Our Beloved Albert King.  He lived to see the beginings of the Blues;  And he gave it his sweat, touch and Soul it will never since be without.  He taught us to attack our music with the full force of our feelings.  He lit many torches that became Beacons in their own right.  Just as he told and showed us about the likes of Blind Lemon, Robert and Lonnie Johnsons;  We will tell Those coming behind Us about the Great Albert King and the Blues Icons we were fortunate enough to hear, play with and-or know in the depths of our Souls.  The Beat and Torch go on................
Albert met Lee, a cousin of Freddy King, at the Filmore West in 1968 and has played and recorded with him many times since.  At his last show just before he passed to Glory, Albert called Lee up from the audience, unstrapped Lucy and gave her to an  unsuspecting Lee.  Lucy was custom made especially for Albert as a gift from ZZ Top.  The Beat and torch go on.....................
This is thought to be the last picture taken of Albert before his passing to Glory.

HISTORY
Ladeeeeez and Gentlemen....
Miss ... ETTA ... JAMES ......

Give it to'em Sweetheart !

Ever since she was 16 years old, Etta James has been at the forefront and been the epitomy of the blues.  Compromising only to neccessary etiquette, and energetically filled with the essence of Blues;  Etta will surely be counted with the greatest of LADY Bluesmen.
40 years ago now, when I was 15 years old, my aunt Gloria introduced me to Gate who was playing at a local establishment she frequented after work.  After sitting in with Gate that night, he extended an open invitation to come sit in whenever I could;  Which of course I did.  I may as well have been in Heaven.  I learned as much from talking to Gate as I did sitting next to him playing to my amazement.  Gate's eyes would often look off into infinity as he spoke of the past and future; ....a true Guru to my being.  I would soon realize that those lessons from Gate were my first real encounters with the SOUL of Music and the Blues.  I have been addicted ever since.
One of the greatest things that Gate instilled in me ...and countless other people... was to reject fad and "peer" pressures to become hung up on 1 kind of Music.  Gate could play it all, and respected my  own wide crossover tastes and abilities.  "Listen closely to all Music and allow it to sink in",  he said, "....and your Soul will play what you hear in all kinds of Music."  He gave authority to such wide taste.  There was an air about Gate that said he would be equally at home and stand out on anyones' stage;  ....a very rare quality back then.  THAT was the authority that was branded into my Soul.  And that branding is surely what has enabled me over the years to be comfortable and joyed on just about anyone's stage.

THANKS GATE.  I am forever endebted to you.
I met Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins in 1964 when I was 17 years old.  The band I was playing in had shows in Austin Texas on a regular basis.  I saw on a poster that Lightnin was playing at a local club ....The 11th Door if I remember correctly.  The club was located in an old wooden buidling that appeared to be an old boarding house subdivided into business rentals.  You had to walk up a long outdoor stairway to an upper side door into the building that was the front door for the club.  Lightnin was quiet and unassuming until he got to squirming around adjusting things in preparation for the first song. He mumbled a few words, with big smiles that said he was fixing to do some remarkable things if you payed attention, ...learned from a very long road of which allot was dirt road.

I got to sit in with Lightnin on several occasions when I wasn't mesmorized just sitting in the front rows taking him all in.  I kept these visits very low key if not secret from the other members of the band I was playing in;  I was selfish with this time and wanted to remain low key around Lightnin and un-noticed from our band's popularity;  Not an
easy task for teenagers full of piss and vinegar.  Like Gatemouth, Ligntnin was also most generous revealing helpful insight into the SOUL that makes up the Blues.  The 2 things he said I remember the most was "you just play a little and talk a little ...and just cat like that";  And, "somes' gonna cat with you and somes' not, ...you jus give 'em what you got".  And Lightnin was a Master in "just cattin like that" and giving an audience what he had in a subtle way.  A good portion of what he did was impromtu and made up on the spur of the moment, mixed in with stories from the long road behind him, and filled with names of Bluesmen that are now famous but barely known in 1964-65.  I also learned from Lightnin that old funky Guitars had a distinct sound and place in Folk Blues !

Bet that Lightnin has taught the Pickers in Rock and Roll Heaven to "just cat like that" with whatever you've got.
Our Band's bass player introduced me to the Eastwood Country Club in San Antonio Texas.  Being underage, it was one of the few
places we could go and get a beer or 2 ...and hear/see Blues.  One night when I was turned away at the front door, I got in the
back door with the club Musicians which was my entry point, guitar in hand, from then on.  Graduating from sitting on eqpt cases side stage, I got chances to sit in side-stage with many good bands and
Personalities such a Bobby Bland and BB King.  I became known in the back as "Lil White Boy".  Booker T  taught me there how cool 2 note chords are and that a full 1 finger bar chord made a minor13 and how that dischord could be used.  A raid on the club for underage drinking ceased my visits... and I moved away before I "became of age".
It's King Biscuit Time !......
Folks, THIS is where  modern Blues and Rock was born.
