Kris and her good friend Debbie Mosely were guitar students of mine at Mr. Ware's record and music store in Wonderland Mall in 1964.  Although we had a few periods of closeness;  her main beau had a cooler color 1957 Chevy than mine and had that "Elvis Presley" appearance!

I ran into Debbie Mosely while in Hawaii on a 10 day combat vacation from vietnam.  That vacation from combat accompanied by a very beautiful Debbie (and her also gorgeous sister Robin) was heavenly beyond description.  Several times while there I got a bit scared thinking that maybe I had been injured badly in vietnam and was only dreaming;  I literally pinched myself very hard a few times to make sure it was real.  Her family moved back to San Antonio just in time for my departure from the army, and Debbie and I became rather close Friends again.  Debbie went on to the University of America in Washington D.C. seeking to become a Russian / USSR linguist and analyst !

This picture was taken in 1964 at the beginning of my first senior year, around the same time that I realized I was madly in love with freshman Gaye ...and had not even met her yet !  But that addiction and not-so-subtle creative perserverance prevailed and in several weeks we were inseparable for about 18 months.  To remain with Gaye in school the next year, I dropped my required biology class 6 weeks before graduation so I would have to come back for another senior year.

Gaye became one of The Outcasts' show dancers, along with her sister Linn and friends Allison Eels and Linda Graham.

"Marge" was the younger sister of one of my first neighborhood Friends, Terressa.  Terressa's boyfriend J.W. Denny and his younger brother Jimmy were equally close Friends.  Remarkably, Terressa and J.W. were inseparable for the years I knew them;  And Marge's heart was given to Richard Luthie for that same amount of time.  I never saw 2 couples who dearly enjoyed arguing and fighting so much;  I guess it ran in the family!

Years later Jimmy was shot and died in JW's arms.  JW traveled on the professional Rodeo circuit for awhile.

I cared for Leigh Goodfleisch allot.  She had an incredibly infectious smile, loved pranks, was a joy to be with, and had a love of life that will always be a hallmark in my fondest memories.  I do not remember a single time seeing Leigh without a smile and laughter.  I blew up my 1957 Ford station wagon's engine late one night at rather high speeds trying unsuccesfully to get Leigh home on time;  Close but no cigar;  We limped into the Randolph AFB front gate where I turned around and Leigh walked a short distance home;  The gate guards shook their heads with humor as I made my turn-around with several rods knocking.  I limped the wagon 30 or-so miles home with the help of a can of STP, but it never ran again, and I hated to see it towed from my front yard curb before I joined the army.

Leigh and Sue Ohman (shown below) were both very close Friends of each other and of The Outcasts.  They both had incurable crushes on Outcast Buddy Carson.  I was much closer to Leigh than to Sue but saw them both many times where The Outcasts performed.  Sue emailed me a couple years ago and reported being happy and doing just fine.  I hope that Leigh is too.

I blew my right hand up with a home-made bomb in 1963 ...which was miraculously salvaged by NASA surgeons at Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland AFB.  During that extensive rehab I met Gloria in the Hospital elevator ...and she swept my Being into a dizzy heavenly orbit for quite some time.  I could not possibly describe well enough what an alive and sensuous young lady Gloria was.  I saw her briefly for the last time in 1968 while on leave from army flight school;  and what a gorgeous and stunning woman she grew up to be, as bubbly and full of life as the first day I met her in the elevator.

Donna was the daughter of Faye Patton, and the heart throb of more guys than I can count;  Certainly for me as well.  Her Mom's riding stables was a gathering place for a number of teenagers in the western Lackland area.

Joy also frequented Faye Patton's riding stables.  Joy was the daughter of Sally and Allen Senter. Joy's Mom Sally was The Outcasts first professional manager and mostly responsible for The Outcasts' rapid professional growth and popularity.  Joy broke my heart more than once !
Joy during a visit we made to  Breckenridge Park and the Museum of Art in 1970 while I was an army pilot stationed west of Ft. Worth, several months after my return from vietnam;  ....And just before heartbreak #2 !

Rosan was a dear and close Friend and icon of the Westwood teen crowd;  who could and usually would befriend and party with the heartiest;  And our Westwood neighborhood teens circle did indeed party rather hearty (a few of us a bit more, more freely and frequent than others).  -------   Eddie Jones, Connie Duggins, Susan Parker, Lucky Pointer, Trudy Leggett, Kathy O'Day, Kathy Zimmerman, Bobby "Go-Go" Gomez, "Happy" Munoz, the Pogue brothers, the Denney brothers, the Lefkowski sisters, Richard Luthie, Sharon Glover, the Wolfolk brothers, Richard Richie, the Knobloch sisters, the Browning brothers and sister, both Janet Johnsons, Anita Hilje, Skillet, Donna Roberts, Bobby Shaw, Duffie Lazarus, Ray Bonner, Luggie brothers, Vivian Coker, Donna Brown, .....and far too many more for me to recall;  Great Friends and great times I'll never forget.  Rosan was one of the few that held true to Friendships right up to the time that our generation of teens grew up and and the last of us melted into society one way or the other.

I carried this picture, (along with others of Gaye I had laminated), in my wallet from the time it was taken in the summer of 1965, until 1976 when they were removed to preserve their present condition shown here.  They rode with me through some pretty darn tough times, including vietnam.

Ruth was another person who had an infectious happiness with life !  1966 was a very trying year for me most of the time;  But when I could find Ruth her personality and happiness would put some charge back in my soul's batteries;  And I don't even know if she realized it ... I hope she did.

My Very Dear Cuz Mimi Justus lived her early years in San Antonio close to our family and moved to Dallas while in intermediate school.  An early fan of The Outcasts who starred in her garage record parties with her school friends.  Mimi was / is one of the most talented and creative minded people I have ever known.  Fate has kept us living far apart far too many times.  Love ya, Cuz.

------- ABOUT THE PASTURE PARTY HAYRIDES -------

Faye Patton ran a horse riding stables just northwest of the Hwy 90 / Loop 410 intersection, ...which was frequented by many of the young people that made up our neighborhood "gang".  Faye would throw hayride parties in vacant pastures that she somehow found and knew would not get raided with a bunch of teenagers partying hardy.  She would pile hay onto a horse drawn flatbed trailer to transport those that didn't have cars to the pasture parties.  Those that had cars would bring the refreshments and form a circle in the pasture with headlights facing inward to provide lighting for The Outcasts, dancing and partying, ...not to mention much activity going on in the shadows!  Electric power for The Outcasts amplifiers was generated by 12vdc>110vac military electric inverters bought from the Air Force surplus-salvage yard a Kelly AFB and connected to the batteries of cars in the party circle.  The parties and much innocent fun would last well into the morning.  Thank You Faye; RIP.

When I returned from vietnam in 1969 I begged the army and their "resourses" to assign me away from their war efforts because I would be compelled to tell the truth about vietnam and not what the army would want me to tell to the contrary.  But true to the fascist nature army commanders must be in their positions, the army refused and assigned me to train and counsel officer candidate student pilots;  And of course the army was not pleased at all with what I told anyone who would listen, including my students, and the army pointedly demonstrated their displeasure and power.  A downward spiral began for me that took me many years to recover from.  ~~~~~~~  I lost contact with Gaye in 1972 during a particularly difficult time for me;  And I kept a promise to a member of her family and didn't try to re-establish contact when those difficulties were overcome several years later.
Gaye was severly injured in a car accident at the beginning of the school year 1965.  I spent every possible moment with her in the hospital.  In the 5th month of her hospitalized rehabilitation, I went straight to the hospital after my half day of school, as was my strict routine;  But Gaye was gone;  Her parents had secreted her out by air ambulance during the night and moved to California unannounced.  7 months later I joined the Army as the only option I had for higher education and a future with guaranteed medical coverage that I could find & achieve for her / my future.  I was finally able to see Gaye again in Nov. '68 on my way to vietnam after graduating from flight school, and saw her again on the way home a year later.  I brought her back to San Antonio for a month visit, ...her first since she had left 3 and a half years earlier.  It seemed to both of us that Light was finally appearing at the end of the long dark tunnel behind us.  It was good we didn't jump the gun.
